Celebrity Absences

As part of the usual structure that I like to use of define/play/practise/nail I felt the children needed a bit of reinforcement before the nailing stage so I thought it would be fun for them to ring me to explain why their child was not at school...but not just any child....and not just any excuse.....

We just had fun playing a game of 'celebrity absences' in order to practise the use of the progressive verb forms (impressively they worked out that depending on the time period concerned that it would either be past or present progressive). The children pretended to call me to explain why their son or daughter was absent from school. We enjoyed thinking of who they could be the parent of (book  characters/celebrities/sportspeople etc.) and also inventing the excuses for the absence. Mrs Sheeran rang me to say that Ed wasn't in school because he "was writing his next number one selling album,". Of course, it was recorded as an unauthorised absence!
