Word Up!

In response to the thought provoking article by Penny Slater  https://blogs.hertsforlearning.co.uk/2016/07/25/reading-re-envisaged/#more-1677 I started to think about how we else we could raise the profile of vocabulary knowledge as an essential building block towards the higher order demands that are so vital and talked about following the KS2 test last year but also FOR THE LOVE OF WORDS!

We went for the 'old goodie' 'Word of the Day' but added a little Albert Village twist by displaying them on our doors in order to what we have termed 'spread the words'.

It's created 'wordtalk' amongst the children, parents and staff (non teaching included). Everyone is doing it in their own kind of way, some are getting children to write it, some are including definitions and examples of usage but the key thing is everyone is talking about it.

Some of my personal favourite so far include: lollygagger, loquacious, bibliopole, and tariddle. I heard one child say today "I think a gamp is a monster," to which another replied "It's a light at a camp site !". Brilliant!
